A few years ago I began creating masks and other constructions out of recycled hockey gear. The genesis of this was my second book: Fabulous Fabrications from Busted Hockey Gear, Goose Lane Editions. I was drawn by the thought that all of the materials (old hockey equipment) had see a lot of wear and tear. In the market of primitive and tribal masks there is much value placed on if they have been used in ritual practices, or "danced". All of this equipment has definitely been danced, again and again.
